What is the Social Work Licensure Compact?

The Social Work Licensure Compact (SWLC) is an interstate agreement that allows licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs) and LICSWs to practice across multiple member states under a single compact privilege — without obtaining a full license in each state. It's a major shift for the profession, particularly for telehealth providers and social workers who see clients in multiple states.

As of 2026, over 30 states have enacted the Compact into law. The Commission is actively working through rulemaking — compact privileges are not yet being issued but implementation is underway. CompactReady helps you get organized and ready now.

For official compact information, visit swcompact.org. CompactReady is an independent tool and is not operated by the Social Work Compact Commission.

How to prepare for Social Work Compact privileges

1
Verify your license qualifies. Must be a full LCSW or LICSW with no disciplinary history. Use CompactReady's eligibility checker to confirm you meet the requirements.
2
Track your home state CE requirements. Compact privilege holders only need to meet their home state CE requirements — not each privilege state's. Get your CE tracking organized now.
3
Monitor the Compact rollout. Follow swcompact.org for privilege issuance timelines and get state launch notifications via CompactReady.
4
Keep your home state license current. If your home license lapses, all compact privileges lapse immediately. CompactReady keeps your renewal dates front and center.

Common questions about the Social Work Compact

Quick answers for LCSWs and LICSWs evaluating compact participation.

The Social Work Licensure Compact (SWLC) is an interstate agreement that allows licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs) and LICSWs to practice in multiple member states under a single compact privilege — without obtaining a full license in each state. It is governed by the Social Work Compact Commission and implemented state-by-state through enabling legislation.
As of 2026, over 30 states have enacted the Social Work Compact into law. The Commission is actively conducting rulemaking — compact privileges are not yet being issued. Implementation is estimated at 18–24 months from the April 2024 Commission launch. For the always-current official status, visit swcompact.org.
To qualify, you generally need to: (1) hold a full, unrestricted LCSW or LICSW license — associate or intern licenses do not qualify; (2) be licensed in a state that is a Compact member; (3) have no disciplinary actions on any professional license; and (4) meet experience requirements. CompactReady's free eligibility checker walks you through the key questions.
No — compact privilege holders only need to satisfy the CE requirements for their home state license. Privilege states do not stack on additional CE requirements. This means you can practice in dozens of states without tracking separate CE obligations for each one. CompactReady's CE Tracker is designed around this model.
If your home state license lapses or is suspended, all of your compact privileges lapse immediately. CompactReady's dashboard keeps your home state license renewal date visible at all times so you never miss a renewal.
When you move to a new compact member state, you have a 60-day notification window to declare your new home state. During that window, your existing compact privileges remain valid. CompactReady's Relocation Wizard calculates your deadline and walks you through the steps.
